Americans are gobbling up more organic food than ever before. And the organic produce section is seeing some of the biggest growth in the now $43 billion sector. From organic blueberries and organic apples to organic packaged greens and cut-up organic vegetables ready for our children’s lunch box or our family’s dinner plate, we’re consuming more organic produce every day.

A growing movement

Organic produce has been with us since the dawn of nature, but the seeds for what we know as the organic movement were largely cultivated in California by visionaries who wanted to grow the best quality food in the most environmentally supportive way. There are more organic farms in California now than in any other state.

"Organic is a top choice because of the confidence in organic as the best choice to avoid foods grown with toxic and persistent pesticides and the surest way to avoid genetically modified products."

We often hear that ideas and trends beginning in California have a big impact. Since those early days in the 1960’s, the organic movement has spread across the United States and throughout the world.

I worked on one of the original organic vegetable farms on California’s central coast after college. It was there that I learned how important it is to nourish the soil with organic production practices and to nourish your body with healthy organic food. I’ve been involved in the movement ever since.

Planting new seeds

We were trying to change things back then, and are still working to make a difference. You can contribute to a healthier planet and a healthier population by choosing the best for your family. Every time you choose organic, you support a farming and food system that enriches the environment and lightens your family’s load of chemicals and other harmful substances.

Millions of individuals and families across our nation have discovered the benefits of eating organic food and using organic products in their daily lives. In the last five years, organic fruit sales have soared 123 percent, while organic vegetable sales have jumped by 92 percent.

Why are organic fruits and vegetables flying off the shelves? Today’s increasingly health-conscious consumer is completely dedicated to eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Organic is a top choice because of the confidence in organic as the best choice to avoid foods grown with toxic and persistent pesticides and the surest way to avoid genetically modified products.

A fertile future

When we buy organic, we’re not just helping ourselves or our family. With every purchase of organic food or an organic product, we are helping to maintain and advance organic practices that are not just good for our health, but for the Earth.

Every dollar you’re spending on organic helps to support a hard-working organic farmer, rancher, processor and other business committed to environmentally sound agricultural practices, clean and unadulterated food, and a transparent and rigorous system of regulations and quality standards. All of us can help this movement advance by eating, using, and supporting organic products, and in the process our bodies and our planet will flourish.
