Pet Parents Trust the Pros: Benefits of Professional Pet Sitters

Caring for pets while we’re away matters, and professional pet sitters help ensure furry family members stay safe, happy, and supported.

We sometimes have to leave our pet pals at home, whether for an afternoon, overnight, weekend, or extended trip. They are our family members, and they deserve the same care we expect for our human kids. Pet parent Elizabeth H. has a years-long relationship with her pet sitter, and says, “Especially at the holidays, it’s crucial to have an expert, a trusted pet sitter, who knows how to handle any situation that could arise. I was away for three weeks at Christmas one year, and I couldn’t have gone if I didn’t have complete faith that my cat would be well cared for, safe, and loved.”

The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS) is the country’s only non-profit educational and business-building organization, dedicated to ensuring the highest professional business and care standards among its membership. Members are offered continuing education through NAPPS’ certification process, webinars, blog posts, social media groups, and an annual convention that brings national and international members together to network and take part in educational seminars on pet care, business growth, and standards of care. Many members have started their own businesses after years in the veterinary field as certified veterinary technicians or veterinary assistants.

The benefits of pro pet sitters

NAPPS member and pet parent Kylie Holliman, owner of Fire Hydrant Pet Sitting Co., LLC, likens choosing a pet sitter to hiring a contractor for home renovations. “We want the job done right the first time! Could a friend tackle the project? Sure, but problems come up. By hiring a professional pet sitter, you know your pals are cared for by an experienced, insured animal lover with certifications in animal care.”

NAPPS 2025 “Business of the Year” winner Jill Merjeski, of Jill’s Next Door Dog Walking and Pet Services, LLC, emphasizes that, “Pet parents need to know the difference between hobby sitters and professional pet sitters. Professionals offer training, accountability, and trust. Hobby sitters may love animals and charge less, but often lack certifications, insurance, bonding, and the experience needed to handle emergencies or complex pet behavior. Professional sitters are prepared, reliable, trained, and deeply committed to your pets’ well-being. For us, it’s not just a simple visit. Our professionalism and expertise are our standard of care.”
