Women working in sports continue to encounter persistent and systemic barriers that limit advancement, visibility, and long-term career sustainability. While the sports industry has grown dramatically over the past several decades, particularly following the passage of
Title IX in 1972, leadership roles have not kept pace with participation gains. Women remain underrepresented in senior decision-making positions, experience ongoing pay inequities, and are frequently excluded from informal networks where influence and opportunities are cultivated. These challenges are compounded by workplace cultures that often undervalue diverse leadership styles and fail to accommodate work-life realities, particularly for caregivers.
Support that spans the industry
Founded in 1979, Women Leaders in Sports emerged directly from this landscape of inequity. Originally established as the Council of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, the organization was created by trailblazers who recognized that progress in women’s sports required intentional leadership development and collective advocacy.
For over 45 years, and through several evolutions in name and scope, Women Leaders in Sports has remained steadfast in its mission to change the leadership landscape across the business of sports. Today, it operates in its most inclusive and innovative era, supporting women across professional, collegiate, and emerging sectors of the industry. For many women, one of the most powerful ways to overcome barriers is by engaging in professional communities beyond their own organizations.
External networks provide access to mentorship, sponsorship, and peer support that may not exist internally, especially for women who are the “only” or “one of few” in their workplace.
Research supports this impact: a recent study by Navigate found that women affiliated with professional organizations report significantly higher career satisfaction and lower job insecurity than non-members. Women Leaders in Sports facilitates this connection through a national membership community, leadership experiences, scholarships, and Member Circles focused on topics ranging from mental health and compliance to Title IX and LGBTQIA+ inclusion.
A legacy of turning words to action
Organizations also play a critical role in dismantling barriers. Meaningful progress requires more than statements of support — it demands structural change. Employers can invest in leadership development for women, ensure equitable pay and promotion practices, normalize flexible work arrangements, and actively sponsor women for high-visibility opportunities.
Partnering with organizations like Women Leaders in Sports allows employers to extend professional development, build stronger talent pipelines, and demonstrate a tangible commitment to equity. By empowering women and equipping organizations, Women Leaders in Sports continues to transform barriers into pathways and drive lasting change across the sports industry.
